Scary critters

I looked out the window into the pasture this morning, and what did I see? A dead cow!!! Not just any dead cow, but my beloved Dorie. She was stretched out in front of the hay feeder on her side, her neck stretched out and her head in the snow. No movement at all, not a twitch. Her belly looked slightly, distended, just the beginnings of bloat.

Resisting the urge to vomit, or cry, I threw the dogs out before donning my coat and boots. Out the door I could see she was still laying in the same position, despite the dogs morning ritual of barking their lungs out just for the sake of barking. I felt sicker and sicker as I walked out to the pasture, calling her, with no response.

It wasn't until I was over the fence, less than 20 feet away, that she rolled over and looked at me.

Dorie, left, Mindy, front
Evil bovine. She's perfectly fine.

Wait a minute!!! Was that slight bloat actually a calf?!!? Oh, precious Dorie! Although, she didn't seem impressed with me waking her up.

[Note how 'shorter' the hay feeder has gotten in the snow.]

Tori and Knightmare were curious about the early morning excitement, but paused for a picture, and some loving.
Casper, the steer, Oscar, the billy
The boys also came out to see what was going on.

Back in the house, settled, and calm. Husband and Bigs long gone for the day, Littles still sleeping, all is quiet.
Until another source of evil decides to play with the dinky cars lined up on the back of the couch, thumping them onto the floor. Thanks, Lucky. That helps.

Must be something in the air today.

  2. Phew!!!!! I can see her face when you went out. Kinda like "WHAT? DO YOU MIND? I'M SLEEPING!". Glad things worked out for you both.

  3. Ah! I remember my puppy sleeping on the back porch after a snow. I saw four stiff legs protuding from under a rug on the porch. I yelled and screamed and cried, running out the front door in skimpy clothes and barefoot in the snow. Finally, Sadie looked out like I was so silly. Stinking dog, ignoring me, making me think she was dead.

My heart was in my throat as I read your post! I thought you had lost her to a scary critter.
